Telogen Effluvium

Effluvium is a widespread loss of hair of the scalp and on whole body. Such a loss of hair is usually a reaction to intense stress. Telogen effluvium is a problem that can affect people of any age, it usually occurs rapidly, but it goes away by itself within six months, although some people may go into a chronic problem.

Development of telogen effluvium occurs some time after the stressful period or event which acted as a trigger. Women who suffer from this problem often have a diagnosis of neuroticism or excessive anxiety. The problem is transient and eventually leads to improvement of the situation. Telogen effluvium is associated with the natural cycle of hair growth and belongs to major hair loss types like Male pattern baldness, Female pattern baldness, Alopecia Areata and Trichotillomania.

Telogen Effluvium

TERMS:  EFFLUVIUM CAPILLORUM (ANAGENIC,TELOGENIC)

ANAGENIC

Anagen Effluvium: a significant loss of hair shafts in their anagen phase. The onset may be rapid (e.g. within 2-4 weeks of the cause). Major hair loss may result in extreme cases. Hair regrown is spontaneous.

The first part of this illness refers strictly to the hair growth cycle which occurs naturally in the human body. The second part of the name is the way that lost hair grows and how fast it progresses through the cycle.

Why? Damaged hair follicles because of medicaments (kolhicin), chemotherapy, intoxication (pesticides with talicum, insecticides)

Result: Fast baldness appearance, whole scalp area is affected.

Therapy: Removing the cause (stop taking kolhicin, chemotherapy…)

Causes:

  • Chemotherapy drugs (anti mitotic agents)
  • Radiotherapy
  • Malnutrition
  • Seborrhea dermatitis and other localized dermatitis.
  • Hormonal contraceptives
  • Vitamin A poisoning
  • Iron deficiency
  • Chronic infections
  • Some Drugs

Anagen effluvium is one of those diseases that actually can be treated usually with success. Although the effects are often devastating, as it were, almost overnight hair loss that is seen with cancer patients, they can be assured that they will have some relief when it comes to hair grow back after treatment stopped.

TELOGENIC

Telogen Effluvium eviction of hair shafts from follicles which have prematurely entered their resting phase. Hair losses in telogen effluvium usually present within 6-12 weeks following stresses and other triggering factors. In many patients, the hair fall rates may be sufficient to reduce a previously wonderful head of hair to 1-2cm stubble within weeks. Lost hair usually regrows.

Chronic telogen effluvium is a condition whose diagnosis is often missed. It is chronic and affects women aged 30-60.  It begins abruptly, with or without initiation factor and patients can lose up to 50-400 hairs / day. Chronic telogenic effluvium can be expected to resolve spontaneously in six months to 6-7 years.

CAUSE

  • Infections (tifus, malaria, virosis), medicines, chemicals, hormonal changes
  • Postpartal effluvium after giving a birth (baldness appears 2-4 months after giving a birth of child and dissappears after few months)
  • After beginning or stopping using contraception, hypothireasis, hyperthiroesis, chronically illness (colagenosis, lupus, diabetes)
  • Malignant diseases-cancers,malabsorption, enithrodermia, anemia, blood iron deficiency, zinc deficiency, biotin deficit, essential fat acids deficit, diets, stress

Result: 2-5 months after exposure – hair density decreases and hairloss becomes visible

TREATMENT OPTIONS

OTHER CAUSES OF HAIR LOSS

  • Medicaments, stress, diets, anemia, non-adequate eating habits (iron, zinc, fat acids deficiency)
  • Digestive system disorder, lupus, colagenosis, epidermiolisis, autoimmune disorders
  • Mental illness, thyroid gland disorder, diabetes, hormonal disorders, chemotherapy, radiation
  • Scar healing head injuries, hair colors, hair chemicals, aggressive hair treatments.
